Thank you for downloading File3D. File3D is a utility that makes the File
Manager application in Windows 3.1x and Windows NT 3.x use 3D dialogs and
effects.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
===================

One of:

- Windows 3.1 or Windows 3.11
- Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11
- Windows NT 3.51

While File3D will run on later versions of Windows, it offers no
additional functionality as the File Manager (and Windows generally) is
of course already 3D.

While File3D should theoretically work on Windows NT 3.1, I was unable
to get it to function during my latest tests. Windows NT 3.51 should
certainly work, but I do not have a copy of Windows NT 3.5 to test with.
The installer will only work on Windows NT 3.51 or later.

INSTALLATION
============

To install File3D, just run SETUP.EXE. If you are installing the
Windows 3.x version, you will be prompted to choose your Windows
version. This is because File3D updates the File Manager to fix some
visual glitches visible in the 3D version. File3D also includes the
Year 2000 fix for File Manager if you haven't got it already.

Note that if you have a non-English version of Windows, your File
Manager will be replaced with an English version if you choose one of
the Windows 3.x/Windows for Workgroups options. If you'd rather this
didn't happen, choose the Windows 95 option instead, and File3D Setup
will not update your File Manager.

If you choose the wrong version of Windows, you will either end up with
a File Manager that doesn't work (choosing WFW 3.11 on Windows 3.1), or
a File Manager with degraded functionality (choosing Windows 3.1 on WFW
3.11). If this does happen, your old File Manager is renamed to
WINFILE.F3D, so you can delete WINFILE.EXE and rename WINFILE.F3D back
using an MS-DOS Prompt.

File3D does not currently include an update for File Manager for Windows
for Workgroups 3.1, or for any version of Windows NT. If the visual
glitches do bother you on these platforms, please send me an e-mail and
I will look into creating an update for you.

UNINSTALLATION - WINDOWS 3.x
============================

If at a later date you want to remove File3D from your system, do the
following:

1. Delete C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FILE3D.DLL (where C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM is the
   path to your Windows SYSTEM directory).

2. Open WINFILE.INI with an editor such as Notepad, and remove the line
   in the [AddOns] section that looks like this:

   File3D=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FILE3D.DLL

UNINSTALLATION - WINDOWS NT
===========================

If you wish to uninstall the Windows NT version of File3D, simply
double-click the Uninstall File3D icon in the File3D program group.
